STEM Degrees include the academic disciplines of science, technology, engineering and math. Undergraduate programs are available as both 2-year associates degrees and 4-year bachelor degrees. Prospective applicants should have some kind of math, science and computer skills and a High School Diploma or GED. Other requirements or prerequisites may vary depending on your program or college. Some programs may involve classroom learning, an internship, fieldwork or supervised practice although curriculums vary by subject and specialty.

Which Degree in Math, Science or Engineering is Right for You?

Whether you want to be a math major, a science major or an engineering major is something to think about. Also you should reflect on whether you want to earn a degree and then enter the workplace or whether you are on a continued education track which might lead to very different occupations.

Associates Degrees

Associates STEM Degrees are offered as an Associate of Arts or Associate of Science. Both of these are considered academic transfer credit programs to a 4-year college to either a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science Degree program. The Associate of Applied Science is considered an occupational degree and may be offered through a technical college; it is geared to those who want to graduate with specific skills and look for a job in their field.

Bachelor Degrees

Bachelor STEM Degrees are offered as Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science. Of the two, the arts degree may have more theory and research, liberal arts and social sciences, while the science degree may have an analytical orientation with more math, statistics, computer technology or science-based courses.

Types of Math, Science & Engineering Undergraduate Programs

Usually STEM Degrees are programs where you choose a particular discipline to study, and within that field, there may be room to concentrate on building specific technical skills in order to either initiate or boost a current career. Architecture Degrees

Engineering Degrees

Veterinary-animal Sciences Degrees

At the Associate’s level, STEM degrees in Veterinary-Animal Sciences include programs that might train you to work as veterinary assistants, laboratory animal caretakers, animal care workers of veterinary technician roles.[viii] Entry-level education for zoologists is typically a Bachelor’s degree[ix] whereas Veterinarians must have a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from an accredited veterinary college and a state license.[x]

Campus or Online Degree?

Working students may gravitate to online degrees if they are offered in your field, simply for the convenience of being able to schedule your studying around your job rather than your job around your degree. Usually distance-learning works for autonomous students and most often allow one to log into courses anytime and anywhere there is Internet.

Campus programs may have the advantage of offering social interaction, which can be stimulating in classroom where you also get hands-on instruction. Also, the college years can be a time of building friends and participating in your school’s community. It really is about your needs, so use either program type to refine your search for an undergraduate math, science or engineering program.        

Accreditation

While in some cases regional accreditation may be sufficient, many architecture, engineering and science careers involve state licensure which means you need to have graduated with an accredited degree and passed state exams. Some references include the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB)[xi], the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA)[xii] and the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission (ABET).[xiii]

Continued Education

Many careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics can either begin or advance with an undergraduate degree,[xiv] however, it may be the case that the type of career you seek requires a graduate degree (either a Master’s or a Doctorate Degree). Students might decide to return to school for a 2-year Masters in Mathematics, a Masters in Architecture, a Masters in Engineering or seek out a specific subfield such as Veterinary Medicine, Construction Management or Landscape Architecture.
