Technology Degree Undergraduate Programs: Basics

Technology Degree undergraduate programs are offered as 2-year Associates Degrees and 4-year Bachelor’s Degrees and while admissions procedures differ, a High School Diploma or GED is a common prerequisite. While programs differ in curriculum and scope, they are geared to present and future technology professionals who utilize science and engineering to connect people through communication, develop, design and test information systems to assist businesses of all sizes, and ultimately attempt to solve real-world problems through computer technology. In addition to classroom learning, your program may include laboratory work, an internship or capstone project. Curriculums tend to vary between colleges.

Finding Your Fit as A Technology Major

One of the important things to realize is that not all Technology Degree programs are the same; something like siblings who have the same parents but different personalities. In fact, it may be helpful for you to think about what type of technology major you want to be. Are you leaning towards management? Do you prefer writing computer codes? Do you want to fight cyber-crime? Does the telecommunication industry fascinate you? Or are you more of a creative yet technologically-savvy soul? Checking through the subject selection may clarify just what kind of information technology degree you are really interested in. Some of the categories include:

Business Information Systems Degrees: Business Information Systems (BIS) majors study the use of technology in business in order to potentially work as business analysts or in enterprise strategy.[iii]

Computer Science Degrees: Computer Science majors learn to do things like write software, create devices and use technology to solve problems in computing for diverse industries (health, business, science)[iv]

Database Management Degrees: Database Management majors learn how to use computer software to organize, migrate secure and store data[v].

Information Assurance and Cybersecurity Degrees: Information Assurance and Cybersecurity majors learn about the hardware, software, policies and methods to keep the information stored in computer systems safe from threats like theft, fraud, espionage and computer viruses.

Information Sciences Degrees: An Information Science major may use technical skills as well as some social sciences to make connections between technology and the way people use it; some programs are categorized as library sciences.

Information Technology Degrees: Information Technology (IT) majors typically study computer science, business, web development and communications.

Software and Application Development Degrees: Computer Software and Development majors may learn Internet theory, computer languages, computer graphics applications, user interface computer programming and other computer media applications.

Technology Management Degrees: Technology Management majors learn about project management of technological systems and operations, as well as how to manage teams and develop technologically sound strategies for different uses and users.

Telecom and Networking Degrees: Telecom and Networking majors learn how computers communicate with each other through studying topics such as operating systems and applications, networking theory, types of networks, security, troubleshooting and design.

Video Game Design Degrees: Video Game Design majors may either specialize in writing software for use in video games, or learn how to design the multimedia experience (digital storytelling, special effects)

Types of Technology Degrees: Associates & Bachelors

Technology Degrees are available as 2-year Associates Degrees and 4-year Bachelor Degrees.

Associates Technology Degrees

Associates Degrees in Technology are usually offered as Associate of Arts (A.A.), Associate of Science (A.S.) and Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.).  The Associate of Arts may be less common; however, it is considered a transfer degree towards the first 2 years of a Bachelor of Arts Degree. The Associate of Science is considered a transfer degree towards the first 2 years of a Bachelor of Science and is more technical in that you might expect more math and science. The Associate of Applied Science is considered an occupational degree; students learn skills for the marketplace in order to look for entry-level roles for this level of education. 20% of Web developers, web designers and webmasters hold an Associate’s Degree.[vi]

Bachelors Technology Degrees

Bachelor Degrees in Technology include, as mentioned, the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and Bachelor of Science (B.S.) as well as the Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.) in concentration areas within technology fields. Typically, the B.A. is a more general liberal arts degree while the B.S. is more technical, again with more math, science or applied science courses. If you are interested in ultimately working in management, the B.B.A. degree usually involves learning a core set of business courses in addition to specific courses in your major.

Campus or Online IT Degree?

Another choice ahead of you is whether to attend classes on campus or earn an Online IT degree. Certainly, if you are a working professional and the program you are looking for is available through distance-learning, you may find this a convenient alternative. Or, you may be more motivated by the social learning environment and want to avail yourself of your school’s facilities (computer labs, library, gym). Whatever you prefer, use either ‘online’ or ‘campus’ to filter your search.

Continued Education

If you are wondering whether an Undergraduate Technology Degree qualifies you for some of today’s trending jobs, the answer is yes, with some qualifications. A degree is not a guarantee, but many of the computer and IT jobs require at least a Bachelor’s degree.[vii] That being said, today’s employer may look for a candidate with a graduate degree as well, especially to fill managerial roles, such as Computer and Information Systems Managers, so a Masters of Business Administration may work in your favor.[viii] Other useful graduate degrees might include a Masters in Computer Science, Masters in Technology Management, Masters in Information Systems or a Masters in Information Technology.
